Respirators: Fit, Seal Checks, and Cartridges

Respiradores: ajuste, revisión del sello y cartuchos

Cutting, grinding, cleanup, and coating work can put dust, fumes, or vapors into the air we breathe. A respirator does not protect you just because it is on your face. It protects you only when it matches the hazard, fits you, and is used correctly.

Control the hazard before putting on a respirator

  • Before starting, ask what is in the air and how exposure is being controlled. Where it is feasible, OSHA requires the employer to use engineering or administrative controls first, such as capturing dust at the tool. Respirators are used when those controls are not enough.

  • Do not pick protection by how it looks or copy what another worker wears. The rule requires the equipment to be approved for each particular use by a competent industrial hygienist, who is a specialist in air hazards, or another technically qualified person.

  • When respirators are required, the employer must have a written program with procedures for the site. Respirators, training, and medical evaluations must be provided at no cost to you; ask who manages the program.

Fit testing and your seal check

Prueba de ajuste y revisión del sello

  • OSHA requires a medical evaluation before fit testing or required respirator use. Tell the program manager if wearing your respirator causes difficulty so the concern can be addressed before you continue.

  • For a tight-fitting respirator, you must pass a fit test using the same make, model, style, and size you will wear. A different facepiece is not automatically covered by your previous test.

  • It's good practice to check the seal, following the instructions, every time you put the respirator on. Check the straps and anything that could break the seal, like facial hair or other protective gear. A seal check does not replace a fit test.

Check cartridges and stop when protection is uncertain

  • Do not assume a dust filter also handles fumes or vapors. Before starting, confirm with the program manager that the filter or cartridge is approved for your task and the contaminants involved.

  • Follow the program's directions for cartridge replacement, cleaning, and storage. Do not make up a replacement schedule or swap in an unknown cartridge because it connects to the facepiece.

  • If the seal will not hold, equipment is damaged, or the task changes, stop and report it from a safe area. Do not remove or adjust the respirator while staying in contaminated air.
